Almost all car collectors will agree that one of the most desirable and beautiful American automobiles ever produced was the Auburn boat tail speedsters of the 1930s. Today, original examples are highly prized by the most knowledgeable of collectors and have been sold for upwards of one million dollars.Due to their rarity and popularity, the timeless Auburn speedster has been copied over the years. Today, the early examples of the Auburn boat tail recreations have also become quite collectible and desirable. This 1980 Auburn is one of the earliest examples of the second-generation boat tail speedsters. The Southeastern Replicar Company, based in Florida, was one of the first companies to faithfully copy the designs of the original Auburn speedsters during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Using an original Auburn speedster body and fenders as patterns, they created molds in which they could cast a new body out of lightweight, durable fiberglass. They made steel re-enforcements and hardware components to give the body the needed strength and rigidity. These bodies were built and sold in very limited numbers and were made to be fitted onto a 1970s through early 1980s luxury car chassis. This example, which is titled as a 1980 Auburn Speedster, is built on a late model, long wheelbase, Ford chassis. The chassis uses a contemporary front end assembly, front and rear suspension components and a 9 rear end. To power the chassis, a c.1958 Cadillac 365 cid, V-8 engine has been installed. This particular engine was used in the Eldorado-series Cadillacs and has the desirable three-carburetor manifold and produces 335 horsepower. The transmission is a GM Hydra-matic. For steering, a late model GM, tilting steering column with power steering has been installed and is topped by a original signed Nardi steering wheel. Power disc brakes are used to stop the car. To help maintain the outward appearance of a 1930s automobile, a set of fully chromed, True- Classic wire wheels have been installed. On the inside, this modern-day Auburn is loaded with convenience and luxury items such as leather upholstery, a heater and defroster, a Dual brand stereo, a folding convertible top, removable side curtains with Plexiglas windows and a full length tonneau cover. The dash board assembly is designed to resemble those used on original Auburns yet contains a variety of modern gauges and controls including a tachometer, dynamo, oil pressure gauges, speedometer, gas gauge, ammeter, oil temperature gauges and a clock. This example has been owned for many years by a well-respected, vintage car collector. It has been properly stored and maintained and today remains in excellent overall condition. It has been driven less than 14,000 miles since it was built in 1980. The paint, upholstery and chrome are in very good to excellent overall condition. The ivory and gold paint has an even gloss throughout and shows only the expected amounts of wear and slight imperfections that one would expect from a vehicle of this vintage. The interior is supple and very clean. The top shows a few light stain marks and minor discoloration when up, but fits and operates fine. The chrome is bright and shiny. Mechanically, this speedster starts easily and runs well. It has been recently serviced and tuned. The Cadillac engine easily powers the car down the road at modern highway speeds. It is easy and comfortable to drive and also easy to maintain. This example is ready to use and enjoy. This 1980 Auburn speedster offers its new owner the best of both worlds. It drives like a modern automobile, yet has the appearance and feel of one of the most celebrated American classic cars ever built. This vehicle is reasonably priced for a quick sale at $42,900.00.
