Created by industrial designer, Brook Stevens, who was responsible for innovations spanning some 60 years! With his automobile passion and career with Studebaker, he designed his own vehicle along with his two sons in the early 1960's, and later established Excalibur Automobile Corp located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. These beautifully crafted cars are completely factory built, never sold or produced in “kit” form as often assumed. Using only new components, modern drive train & chassis, and styling cues originally borrowed from the distinctive 1929 Mercedes-Benz SSK, these cars were an instant success among luxury car enthusiasts and Hollywood elite!
We are very excited to offer this beautifully kept 1988 Excalibur Series V Roadster! Finished in Gloss Black with matching fenders, it is accented perfectly with a two-tone white and gray pinstripe to truly highlight the shape of the body! The gray leather seating surfaces are accompanied by solid wood dash and upper door garnish moldings. Power comes from its original 305ci V8 mated to the 700R4 4-speed overdrive transmission, with a freeway friendly 2.73 Posi-traction rear axle! The custom-built Excalibur chassis borrows the Corvette suspension from Chevrolet for a full four-wheel independent suspension and 4-wheel power disc brakes! Additional options include air conditioning, power windows & convertible soft top, auxiliary hardtop, dual 8-way power leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt/telescopic feature, cruise control, trumpeted air horns, Pioneer AM/FM/CD audio system with Sony equalizer, interior courtesy lights, full VDO dash instrumentation, dual windshield spotlights, power folding rear rumble seat, rear fender rock guards, gorgeous chrome wire spoke wheels wrapped in Kuhmo 1” whitewall tires, dual side-mounted spare tires, teakwood running board accents, tinted window glass, and more!
These Roadsters represent the rarest model offered by Excalibur during their Series V production run between 1985-1989, with just 55 units produced. This example offered here is one of only 19 built in the 1988 model year, and especially unique being finished with an attractive black exterior! Another interesting point of conversation for these Roadsters is the fact that Excalibur was the only licensed automotive manufacturer worldwide with the ability to offer a factory production vehicle with the use of a rear rumble seat. This car originally sold new to a San Antonio, TX collector where it stayed until approximately 2010, before traveling to a new owner's garage in Fort Lauderdale, FL with just 14,257 miles accumulated on the odometer. This is where it would stay until its purchase by the St. Louis Car Museum with 16,443 miles in October 2023.
Upon arrival, it would be fully inspected and treated to an engine oil change with new filter; new battery; flushed coolant system; new engine spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap & rotor; front hood struts; new power steering pump; serviced the air conditioning system to operate on R134a refrigerant; as well as the installation of a new, hand-produced convertible soft top. This Excalibur Roadster operates just wonderfully in all respects, and after detailing the exterior paint being polished to a high shine, it also shows extremely well as a genuine low mileage vehicle should! Included in the sale will be an original owner's manual, one set of keys, radio instruction manual, storage bag for soft top rear window, and parade boot cover. Please call with additional questions or your chance to view this vehicle in person. Thanks for looking!
