With the Hummer brand off and running since 1992, they continued to find ways to improve the rather sparse, military born off-road vehicle to be more civilized for modern street use. Big changes came about midway through 1997 production, improvements that included an HVAC system providing more accessibility for easier servicing along with a blower motor that moved air more efficiently through the cabin. This was further enhanced with standard interior sound insulation for better cabin volume levels. The turbo diesel engine was also improved offering 5 additional horsepower and 45 ft. lbs. of torque. This noticeable power increased total horsepower to 195, and torque to 430 ft. lbs. and continued with the production H1’s through the 2003 model year.
We are quite excited to have this very rare 1997 Hummer H1 Open Top convertible finished in Gloss Red over newly upgraded Tan Leather interior. Only 1,209 H1’s were produced in 1997, but this early production Open Top represents one of only 34 ever manufactured in this color! Fitted with a new 6.5L Turbo-Diesel engine installed in December 2009, mated to the 4L80E 4-speed overdrive transmission, it offers plenty of power and torque to destroy any off-road trail or urban street environment! Options included power steering, power 4-wheel disc brakes, updated 1997.5 air conditioning system, heated windshields, heated seats, custom Kenwood audio system with amplified MB Quart speakers, 17” polished alloy wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A tires measuring 37×12.5R17, upgraded heavy duty front brush guard, along with Warn Industrial 12,000 lb. wench with remote, cruise control, trailer tow equipment, full power accessories- windows, mirrors, locks, & keyless entry, carpeted floor mats, canvass cargo cover, and intermittent wipers!
This unique example sold new from Lone Star Hummer Inc. based in San Antonio, TX to original owner, Von Faulkner of Austin, TX. He traded in his 1996 Open Top H1 for this new one in Gloss Red for his wife! Unfortunately, as many Hummer collectors are aware, the early engine blocks had a cylinder wall deficiency that lead to block failure. This example experienced that failure at 22,900 miles. This allowed a replacement block to be installed in 1999 by Lone Star Hummer under warranty. Well, the failure of those cast blocks continued through the May 1999 castings, so even the replacement block lasted a similar fate after just 28,000 miles. At this time in June 2009, Mr. Faulkner decided to sell the Hummer to famed Lynch Hummer of Chesterfield, MO. As one the nation’s largest and most successful new & pre-owned H1’s in the country, they opted to remedy this now out of warranty unit in-house. They replaced the engine once again with a General Engine Products (GEP) block with improved casting along with rebuilding the CTIS system with new hoses & connectors, updated steering pitman arm assembly & idler arm kit, full 12K Service with complete fluid & filter change, new tires with original run flats, new main fuel tank & sending unit, along with all new engine & HVAC wiring harnesses!
It then sold to the second owner in December 2009 with only 51,287 miles on the odometer! This new owner was an employee of Lynch Hummer and he held onto his treasured Open Top for the next 9.5 years. Always serviced through Lynch’s extension parts & service company, Adventure Accessories & Hummer Service, after General Motors closed Hummer dealership doors, it remained in caring hands with proper maintenance and attention whenever necessary. It has now been utilized and enjoyed for 66,500 miles without fault. Most recently, in received a new engine serpentine belt in January 2014 along with new batteries, new BFG tires & shocks in June 2015, and a recent inspection and oil change by Hummer Service, now our sister company. It is a remarkable truck with all history from brand new! Every service record, perfect original window sticker, 4 sets of keys with 3 unique single button key fobs, delivery paperwork, factory owner’s manuals, warranty booklets, and all tools & wench equipment! Always garage kept, and complete with unique Dick Cepek 2-piece hardtop, it really provides the best of both worlds, convertible soft top & utility wagon! Don’t wait to jump on an opportunity like this! These have become incredible investments over the last 12 years since the last one left the assemble line!
